How to Choose a Physiotherapy Clinic in Kathmandu: Without Guessing

There are 79 physiotherapy listings in Kathmandu. Nine of them have enough reviews to judge. I am not a physiotherapist, and this is not medical advice. I publish the physiotherapy ranking for this city, and the most useful thing I can tell you is how much smaller your real choice is than it looks.

Your choice is smaller than it looks

Search “physiotherapy Kathmandu” and you get back a list long enough to feel unsortable. It is not. Most of it carries no information at all.

As of the 16 September 2026 refresh I track 76 physiotherapy listings in Kathmandu. 32 of them have no reviews whatsoever. Another 23 sit at a perfect 5.0 built on five reviews or fewer. Keep only the listings with a 4-star-plus average and at least 20 reviews standing behind it (enough that the average is actually saying something) and 10 are left.

Figures from the 16 September 2026 refresh. This is not a ranking. It is every Kathmandu listing that clears a plain evidence bar, in review-count order. The ranking page scores and orders them.

That list is a starting point, not an answer. Two things it deliberately does not do: it does not tell you which of the nine suits your problem, and it does not rule out the other seventy. A brand-new clinic with one excellent physiotherapist and no reviews yet is a perfectly reasonable choice; you just cannot verify it from Google, so you verify it by asking. That is what the rest of this guide is for.

It also is not usually where people start. In a 2025 survey of outpatient physiotherapy patients across Bagmati facilities, about three in four had been sent by a doctor; family and friends accounted for most of the rest, and advertising barely registered. If you already have a name from a doctor or a cousin who had your exact problem, use it. Use this guide to check it.

The short version

The short version

If any of the emergency symptoms below apply, skip this guide and go to an emergency department.

Nine clinics in the city have enough reviews to judge. Start from those, or from a name you were given.

Split the problem before you compare brands: hospital department, private clinic, or a home visit. A citywide top 5 is the wrong unit for a stroke, an ACL, or someone who cannot sit in traffic afterwards.

Ask who will treat you by name, not which listing is first. Reviews in Kathmandu attach to a person, and that person can leave.

A 5.0 with a handful of reviews is not excellence. It is an absence of information. Treat it as unknown, not as good.

Ask to see an NHPC registration certificate, and the number, if anyone will later file a claim. A vague answer is itself an answer.

Get the price of one session, unbundled from oil, steam, machines, or a 10-day package, before anything else.

Walk out if a clinic wants a course paid upfront before it has examined you.

Skip this guide and go to emergency care if you have

Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness across the saddle area

Rapidly worsening weakness in an arm or leg

Pain together with unexplained fever

An injury you cannot put weight on at all

Sudden chest pain or breathlessness, facial droop, or slurred speech

This is general public information, not a diagnosis, and I am not qualified to give one. If any of this applies, the nearest emergency department is the right call, not a clinic comparison.

Hospital, private clinic, or home visit

Most choosing guides pretend every shoulder lives in the same market. In Kathmandu it does not. Decide the setting before you decide the brand: it eliminates more of the list than any rating ever will.

Hospital department

Better when you are already in that hospital, just had surgery, had a stroke, or need a doctor on the same floor. Reviews of the hospital as a whole tell you almost nothing about the physio room.

Start here if the problem is acute, post-operative, or neurological

Private clinic

Better for neck, back, shoulder, sports sprains, and anyone who can walk in and wants time plus an explanation. This is the market Google rankings actually describe.

Start here if you can travel and the problem is mostly musculoskeletal

Home visit

Better for an older parent, someone after a stroke, or anyone who cannot sit in traffic after treatment. Expect to pay more per session than a clinic chair. Ask the same registration and plan questions you would ask in a room.

Start here if getting there is the treatment risk

What the data says about each of those. Hospital physiotherapy departments are mostly invisible on Google: they are listed as the hospital, not as a physio room, so they barely appear in any ranking including mine. If that is your setting, the ranking is the wrong tool and the phone is the right one. Private clinics are where nearly all of the nine above sit, and the reason this is the best-documented of the three.

Home visits are a genuine segment here. As of the 7 September 2026 refresh, I can find six listings in Kathmandu that describe themselves that way. Only one, Home Heal, has a real public record behind it (4.9 from 112 reviews). The others are real services carrying almost no evidence either way: Re-have yourself at 5.0 from 13 reviews, Home visit physiotherapy Kathmandu at 4.5 from 18, and three smaller still. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason the questions below matter more for a home visit, not less: there is no crowd to fall back on.

Condition still matters inside that split. A sports clinic that is excellent for an ACL is not automatically the right room for women's health, a child, or long neuro rehab. If the ranking page and a cousin disagree, take the cousin who had the same problem, then use reviews to check that the named therapist is still there.

Neighbourhood is not a soft preference

A session that goes well still leaves you to get home across the Ring Road. Can I reasonably get there, including after treatment, is often the first real filter in this city. Shortlist two names in a neighbourhood you can actually repeat two or three times a week. Do not pick a citywide winner you will abandon after visit two.

What a physiotherapist is actually allowed to do here

In Nepal, the title Physiotherapist (भौतिक चिकित्सक) is protected by law. It is meant to be held only by someone registered with the Nepal Health Professional Council, ordinarily on the strength of a bachelor's degree. Nepal also has a separate, shorter certificate-level qualification that produces a physiotherapy assistant, with a narrower scope than a registered physiotherapist. That is a real distinction, not a technicality.

I have not confirmed a public, online way to check someone's registration number the way the Bar Council offers for advocates. Until that exists, the practical version is to ask on the phone: Are you NHPC-registered, can I see the certificate when I arrive, and what is the number? A clear answer costs the clinic nothing. A vague one is worth paying attention to.

The number is not only a quality signal. Where a social-health or insurance-style package pays for physiotherapy, the assessment form is supposed to carry the treating physiotherapist's NHPC registration. If anyone in the family will later claim a session, ask for the number before the first invoice, not after.

Why a 5.0 is usually the weakest signal on the page

This site scores every physiotherapy clinic it can find on Google with the same six signals, applied identically everywhere. Nothing in it is “we liked this clinic,” and nothing in it can be paid for. The one part worth knowing as a patient is that a rating gets discounted by how little evidence stands behind it; the full working is on how we rank.

Here is what that does in practice, as of the 7 September 2026 refresh. Kathmandu Physiotherapy Clinic sits at 4.9 from 875 reviews and scores 81.9. Sujit Jha sits at a perfect 5.0 from 21 reviews and scores 65.0. The 5.0 is not being punished for being good. It is being discounted for being untested. Twenty-one reviews is evidence about twenty-one people. Eight hundred and seventy-five is evidence about a clinic. Scores move as the data refreshes; check the ranking page for today's numbers rather than these.

Turned around, that is the single most useful habit you can take from this page: when you see a 5.0, look immediately at the number next to it. As of that same refresh, thirty-one listings in Kathmandu show a perfect 5.0, and twenty-three of those are built on five reviews or fewer. Exactly one has more than fifty.

The method has real limits, worth being honest about rather than hiding. Google gives an average, a total count, and only a handful of individual reviews (not a full 1-star versus 5-star breakdown), and there is no reliable way to detect a bought review from the outside. Reviews in this city also attach to a named therapist, so a listing can keep its score after that person has left.

A high score means enough people had a good enough experience, recently enough, that the clinic is worth a phone call. It does not mean this specific therapist is right for your shoulder, and it does not mean a TikTok reel was an assessment.

Eight questions worth asking before you book

Ask these on the phone. The first three are the ones locals actually use. The rest stop you paying for a spa menu dressed as treatment, and they are how you check a clinic that has no reviews at all.

  • Who will actually treat me, by name: a registered physiotherapist or an assistant, and will it be that person next week?
  • Are you somewhere I can reasonably get to, including after treatment, two or three times a week?
  • What does one session cost, unbundled from oil, steam, machines, or any package?
  • What is your NHPC registration number, and can I see the certificate when I arrive?
  • How long is the first assessment, and do I leave with a plan and home exercises the same day?
  • Do you sell a 10- or 21-day package before you have examined me?
  • For my problem specifically, how will we know in two weeks that this is working?
  • If I actually need a doctor or imaging, will you say so?

“Oil, steam, a machine and physio” is a spa menu until someone has actually tested your strength. Published private prices in Kathmandu vary enough that a single “normal rate” would be a guess: clinic chairs often land somewhere around several hundred to a little over a thousand rupees a session; home visits cost more; bundled packages cost more again. Ask for the unbundled number. Walk out if a clinic will not examine you, will not explain the plan, or asks you to prepay a month before either of those has happened.

See who is actually scoring well in Kathmandu

Once you have the setting, the neighbourhood, and a name, the Kathmandu physiotherapy clinics ranking is the useful version of the nine above: scored, ordered, with the review evidence and contact details on each card. It shows the five highest-scoring listings, then five more as also recommended. It refreshes on a schedule, no clinic can pay to move on it, and nothing in it is hand-adjusted.

Open it. Call two names you would actually book, meaning two you can reach after treatment, for the kind of problem you have, with a person you have asked for by name. That is the opposite of guessing. It is also the opposite of treating first place as a clinical endorsement.

Common questions

Is the top-ranked clinic the best physiotherapist in Kathmandu?

It is the highest-scoring public Google listing under this site's published formula, as of the last refresh. That is not a clinical endorsement. It says nothing about any individual therapist inside a larger clinic, and it is the wrong tool if you need a hospital department or a home visit.

Should I rule out a clinic with no reviews?

No. Thirty-four of the seventy-nine listings in Kathmandu have no reviews at all, and some of them are real clinics with real physiotherapists who have simply never asked anyone to write one. What an empty listing means is that Google cannot help you check it, so you check it yourself. The eight questions above are written for exactly that conversation.

Do I need a doctor's referral first?

Most private physiotherapy clinics in Nepal accept self-referral, no letter needed. Bring any previous reports you already have. A 2025 Bagmati patient survey still found that most people arrived via a doctor. Use that path if you have it. Go straight to emergency care first if any of the symptoms above apply.

Why isn't every physiotherapy clinic in Kathmandu on this list?

I score public Google Business Profiles I can actually find, matched to Kathmandu by address and to the physiotherapy category by Google's own listing data. A clinic with no Google profile, a mismatched category, or an address Google returns with no readable municipality in it is missing until that changes. Hospital departments are usually scored as the hospital, not as a separate physio room, which is why so few appear. Report one from the ranking page and I will look at it.

Can a clinic pay to rank higher, or pay to be removed from this list?

No, either way. I do not sell rank. I sell help earning the reviews rank is built from, and there is no field anywhere in how this runs for “is a client.” How we rank has the full formula if you want to check a score yourself.

What should a session actually cost?

I have not verified a reliable Nepal-wide private figure, and clinic menus vary too much to pretend otherwise here. Government-style package tariffs for physiotherapy have been published in bands of a few hundred rupees a session, with session caps. Private rooms and home visits charge more, and oil, steam and machine bundles charge more again. Ask for the unbundled per-session rate before you book.
